If antibiotics kill all bacteria in your body, then how long will it take to get all of the good bacteria back

It depends on the antibiotic. Most antibiotics target a specific feature of a bacterium. For example, a particular broad spectrum antibiotic may target a component in the cell wall of a bacteria. Some of the good bacteria in your body may also have this receptor and be targeted by the antibiotic. Mostly, the benefit of good bacterium is that they compete for space within your body (for example, in the intestines if you have a lot of good bacteria they may compete for space and food sources with bad bacteria that you eat and therefore lessen your chance of getting food poisoning). You could replace some of the good bacteria that are killed off by eating a probiotic such as yakult. However the good bacteria grow back quickly on their own so I wouldn't worry too much.

Antibiotics don't kill all bacteria in the body.
Reply:Antibiotics destroy harmful bacterias and prevent them from proliferating(multiplying),They do not kill any other bacteria except the harmful bacteria-
Reply:Have a lot of yogurt which will help you. If you are on antibiotics for a long time, you have to take an antifungal medication too, as fungus can grow in your guts, as a result of decrease of good bacterias.

Generally I counteract them with capsules I get from the chemist , they are called iner health plus and they contain millions of good bacteria. I actually feel much better fro taking them with the antibiotics, and you must store them in the fridge.

when you are taking antibiotics, it's also a god idea to eat lots of yogurt because lactobacilli are good for you and help fill the vacuum that killing off all the normal flora causes.

Why are gram-negative bacteria are more resistant to biocides than gram-positive bacteria??

The main factor to the resistance of gram-negative bacteria to biocides is the external lipopolysaccharide layer. Their porins (the structural openings in the wall of gram-negative bacteria) are very selective of molecules they permit to enter the cell. Therefore they resist the entry of antimicrobials and certain antibiotics.

Why are gram-negative bacteria are more resistant to biocides than gram-positive bacteria??
Biocides are designed to attack gram positive bacteria - which would explain why they are more vulnerable to their attack.

Without E coli in our intestines, we wouldn't be able to digest food, but when it gets into our stomach, mouth, or bloodstream, it makes us very sick (like all the stories in the news lately about tainted spinach.)

But antibiotics kill all bacteria, even the good ones you don't want to kill - for example, if on antibiotics too long, you may develop a yeast infection because the good bacteria that prevents yeast infections would have died along with the bad bacteria.

E coli lives in your colon. Only the O157 strain is harmful, without E coli in your colon you wouldnt be able to digest food. We have a mutualistic relationship with the gut flora- they digest our food, we give them a place to live.

I was given the following info:

I had to come up with the cytosine content by myself (I think it's correct) but the following question has me stumped:





"Explain which bacterial species would be able to survive at temperatures lower than 15C"

What the teacher is asking here is for you to apply the principle of melting temperature. As you should know, G:C pair bond through 3 hydrogen bonds, whereas A:T pair bond through 2 hydrogen bonds. So, it takes more energy to break a G:C bond than an A:T bond. You can see that in your data above; when the Adenosine content is higher, the melting temperature is lower. The inverse is true for the Cytosine content.





Now, to the question. The DNA must be melted by the bacterium when it replicates its DNA. The warmer the temperature, the easier this would be to accomplish. As the helicase zips down the double stranded DNA melting it into two single strands, energy is required. The higher the G:C content, the more energy this requires. So, a species that has a higher A:T content would be able to survive at colder temperatures.
Reply:Listeria monocytogenes can grow at a temp lower than 15 C. It can actually grow at temps as low as 4 C, and will grow on lunch meat even in a fridge!

I think Mitosis and Binary Fission are the same thing.

Reply:its definitely binary fission. Mitosis can be referred to cells while binary fission specifically refers to bacteria.
